Texas Tech University Libraries are seeking an Assistant Conservator
to work in the Hoblitzelle Conservation Laboratory in the new
Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library.  The Hoblitzelle
Lab is a centralized facility which oversees the repair of
circulating books from the University Library as well as the
conservation treatment of rare books and manuscripts from the
Southwest Collection and University Special Collections.

Job Description:  Performs basic book repair on items from the
circulating collection as well as a full range of conservation
treatments on rare books and manuscripts from the Southwest
Collection and University Special Collections.  Assesses all
materials brought to the collections conservation unit for
treatment, prepares books to be sent to the commercial binder, and
assists in the training and supervision of three part-time
conservation technicians.  Assists in maintaining environmental
monitoring and integrated pest management programs in the Southwest
Collection/Special Collections Library.  Supports the conservator
with disaster planning and response activities, collections surveys,
exhibition planning and preparation, and the development of
educational programs for library staff and patrons.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in liberal arts or
sciences *or* equivalent education through an apprenticeship or
trade school; one to three years of experience in book repair; good
oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal
skills; knowledge of preservation and conservation issues and an
ability to articulate those issues to library staff.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in special collections
conservation with an emphasis on rare book and paper conservation.
Proficiency in written and photographic documentation.

General Information: The Southwest Collection/Special Collections
Library was completed in September, 1996 and houses one of the
nations finest collections of reference materials and rare books and
manuscripts related to the American Southwest.  The new Library also
contains the Archive of the Vietnam Conflict as well as University
Special Collections, which includes rare books and manuscripts
dating from the 13th century.  The Hoblitzelle Lab is being equipped
through a $97,000 grant from the Hoblitzelle Foundation in Dallas.
The lab consists of 2500 square feet and includes a book and paper
conservation lab, a "dirty" room, a separate area for fume hood and
chemical treatments, and a microscopy and photo documentation lab.
The Conservation Department staff currently consists of one
conservator, one assistant conservator, and three part-time
conservation technicians.

Salary Range:  Base salary and range for a 12 month appointment is
$19,224 - 26,928.  Benefits package includes 2 weeks annual
vacation, sick leave, 13 state holidays, health insurance, and Texas
State Retirement.
