The Department of Printing and Graphic Arts, Houghton Library,
Harvard University seeks a summer intern to survey and perform minor
treatments on albums of architectural photography from the Harrison
D. Horblit Collections of Early Photography.  This remarkable
collection consists of prints, daguerreotypes, cameras and 337 rare
books and albums with original photographs from the 19th century.

The project will be supervised by the Curator and Assistant Curator
of Printing and Graphic Arts and Paul Messier of Boston Art
Conservation.  The initial focus of the project will be an album of
70 albumen photographs from Samuel Bourne's expeditions to India and
the Himalayas during the 1860s. Several other volumes, including an
album of Julio Michaud photographs of Mexican architecture and a
Giorgio Sommer album of Italian architecture, will be examined for
possible treatment as time allows.  The intern will spend four days
at the Houghton Library and one day each week working with Boston
Art Conservation.

The internship will take place during the summer of 1997 and will
last for ten week.  A stipend of $2,500 will be offered.   Send
