Subject: Workshop on conservation of Japanese scrolls
Paper Conservators: An 8 day intensive workshop devoted to the conservation of Japanese hanging scrolls is being planned for Nov. 3-10, 1997 in Vancouver, British Columbia. The workshop will be open to 16 participants, who should have a solid background in Western paper conservation. Participants will spend 3 days constructing their own karibari (drying board) and 5 days mounting a scroll. Drying time will be devoted to lectures, demonstrations and hands-on practice of traditional and contemporary techniques used in Japanese scroll conservation. Instructors: Karibari construction - Carol Yamamoto, private screen and scroll maker, Coquitlam, B.C. Scroll Mounting and Conservation - Jacki Elgar, Asiatic Conservation Department, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA Grants to subsidize the course have been applied for, and new funding sources continue to be researched. Expected course fees range from $1950 (if no grant applications are successful) to $1250 (if all grants applied for to date are approved) per participant. Materials and tools, which must be ordered from Japan and will be kept by the students, account for $1265 of the fees. B.C. paper conservators can apply for individual financial assistance from the BC Arts Counsil "Professional Development Project Assistance for Individuals" (contact Walter Kwan at (250) 356-1728 for application). Deadline is March 15. Out of province residents who are interested in the course are encouraged to investigate individual funding opportunities from their own provincial/territorial governments.
