Subject: Energy saving and environmental control
In regards to energy savings and the message from Dan Riss: Todd Ellison <ellison_t<-a t->fortlewis< . >edu> writes How can one plan for energy savings in the climate controlled areas of a new museum/archives/library? > >A paper by Lars Christoffersen (ICOM-CC 1993 preprints, p601, >"Resource-Saving Storage of Historical Material") reports on a new >archive building in Germany that uses massive masonry walls to >achieve a stable climate with little equipment. Within the Smithsonian, The Freer Gallery of Art, with massive stone walls, used to have the least energy expenditure for climate control of any building in the Smithsonian. I haven't seen energy figures for a few years now, so I don't know if it is still true. The Hirshorn (with thinner concrete walls and a toroid shape) had one of the most expensive to run. Massive masonry walls help a lot! *** Conservation DistList Instance 10:73 Distributed: Tuesday, February 18, 1997 Message Id: cdl-10-73-002 ***Received on Sunday, 16 February, 1997
