Subject: Course in Archaeological Field Conservation
Professional Development Course for Archaeological Field Conservation 3 week course September 8, 1997 to September 26, 1997 Memorial University/Ferryland Conservation Laboratory, Colony of Avalon Interpretation Centre, Ferryland, Newfoundland, Canada. $500.00 (Canadian) The site of excavation for the Ferryland Project lies on a headland of the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland, Canada. The excavation of a seventeenth-century colonial plantation has to date revealed ruins of a forge, waterfront, road and dwellings affording for the conservation, restoration and research of various artifact types. The burial environment too has provided many challenges to the conservator as the natural geological environment and subsequent human influence upon it have produced a complex mineralogical/elemental system. Thus students attending this course will be exposed to numerous organic and inorganic materials in different degrees of preservation. Exposure of the routine conservation practices will provide students with the knowledge and skills to operate an archaeological field conservation laboratory. In addition students may have the opportunity to do a more in-depth examination, conservation treatment or restoration of a specific artifact type. The course is designed for graduates of a conservation discipline or equivalent.
