Archivist III (3574) (Conservator) Recruitment for: Archivist III (Conservator) Salary: $25,382 - $33,229 Closing Date: February 21, 1997 Position Location: Annapolis, Maryland Position Duties: This is the proficient level of professional archival work. This position is responsible for the supervision of projects devoted to physical conservation and reformatting of information to more permanent media. Specific experience in the preservation of archival record material in all media, including paper, film, and electronic formats and in the administration of an archives preservation program. Experience should include a demonstrated ability to undertake complex paper conservation treatments and a knowledge of techniques for reformatting to preserve textual and electronic information. Minimum Qualifications: Each candidate must: Possess a B.A. from an accredited college or university, AND Three years of full-time professional experience in basic archival work, conservation techniques, and the management of microfilming projects. Limitations on selection: The successful candidate shall have: 1. Experience in managing computer databases and image files, 1 year. 2. Experience in managing preservation programs, 2 years. 3. Experience in paper conservation including chemical treatments such as neutralization of acids in paper and eradication of microbiological infestation, 2 years. 4. Experience with physical repair techniques such as mending using Japanese tissue, backing, book binding repair and reconstruction, and polyester encapsulation, 2 years. 5. Knowledge of information preservation programs including the reformatting of images and text through micrographics and digital imaging, 1 year. The Conservator will assist in the supervision of the preservation of electronic information through life cycle programs that create and maintain the archival copy of digital files on microfilm. 6. Experience in managing and training technicians, volunteers, and other staff members, ability to formulate long-range preservation plans, 2 years. Notes: 1. Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a Master's degree in Archival Science or its equivalent may be substituted for one year of the required experience. 2. Applicants may substitute additional experience in professional archival work with public records on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
