Bergen Museum is the administrative unit responsible for museum
activities at the University of Bergen (cultural historical and
natural historical collections). Bergen Museum is engaged in
collecting, documenting, researching, protecting, and disseminating
information in various forms for each field of research represented
by the museum. As a state-owned university museum, Bergen Museum
maintains comprehensive research collections and is a regional
competence and information centre. Bergen Museum has collaborators
in the museum sections of six different institutes, representing
three faculties at the university. In addition, there are two joint
sections placed directly under the director for Bergen Museum.
Altogether there are roughly 77 person-years and over 100
collaborators connected with the museum.

A full-time position as conservator for painting and polychrome
sculpture is available with the Department of conservation.
Employment will take place as soon as possible.

The Department of conservation is responsible for the conservation
and restoration of artefacts and objects from the cultural
historical collections (Department of Anthropology, Department of
Archaeology and the Department of Culture Studies and Art History).
Of cultural monuments, the preservation of rock art is an area of
special attention. The Department of conservation has its own
laboratory and eight permanent positions. It is lead by an associate
professor with a research focus on conservation methods.

At the present time, the speciality field of painting and polychrome
sculpture includes two permanent positions. Among other tasks, it is
responsible for monitoring, conservation, and restoration of painted
wood and canvas owned by the museum. In particular, this includes
the church collections comprised of panel paintings, alter pieces
and sculptures from the Middle Age together with a collection of
artefacts that post-date the reformation.

The person appointed must be certified as a conservator with a
minimum of 3 years of conservation education from a school of
conservation or university with relevant disciplines. Others with
equivalent qualification will also be considered. Practical
experience is preferred, but candidates who have recently finished
their education and training will also be considered.

The person appointed will participate in the conservation of objects
within his or her speciality and within the general field of
painting and polychrome sculpture. The position may also be given
the responsibilities for other tasks such as the training of
students and other trainees, environmental evaluation, safety and
protection of objects in storage and transit, arriving at
professional decisions concerning the choice of conservation and
restoration methods in collaboration with other specialists within
the field of painting and polychrome sculpture, the daily
organisation and co-ordination of tasks and as a representative for
handling external inquiries and contacts for the field of painting
and polychrome sculpture where this is necessary. The ability to
communicate in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish, and English, written
and orally, will be emphasized. The person appointed must remain up
to date with new literature and new methods used within his or her
field. In addition, he or she must be enthusiastic and have an
interest in developing and maintaining contacts with other
specialists both at home and abroad. The position places special
demands on the desire and ability of the person appointed to work
independently, in collaboration with others, and to show initiative.

Salary: The position will be given a salary according to code 1085,
