The Missouri Office of Secretary of State has an opening for
Conservator II (Assistant Conservator) within the Local Records
Preservation Program (LRPP).

Starting Salary - $2,250.00 per month ($27,000 annual)
Position closing date - close of business Monday, March 31, 1997.
The successful candidate must be able to assume duties on or before June
2, 1997.

General Responsibilities: The Conservator II position provides a
full range of conservation services to the historic and archival
collections residing in state agencies, 114 counties (local
government), and state archives.  The services of the position focus
on condition evaluation and process identification, survey,
documentation, housing and advanced paper conservation treatments.
These services are provided for use and access, long term care, and
public exhibit.  Ability to estimate treatment times and meet
deadlines is required as the lab functions as a regional center to
county entities.  Material encountered in treatment includes
handwritten and printed documents, architectural drawings,
blueprints and schematics, maps and plats (some cloth backed), and
books.

The Conservator II works in a communal lab area (with one to four
people).  Assignments vary between independent, single item and
group projects.  This position requires manual dexterity of
specialized hand skills, precision and attention to detail.  This
position requires effective verbal communication and technical
writing, self-motivation, the ability to work with others, and the
ability to follow orders and directives within time restraints and
project deadlines.

Daily work includes use of machines such as board sheer, ultrasonic
welder, vacuum-suction platen and table, stereo-microscope,
hygrothermographs, dataloggers, and psychrometers, typewriters and
MS-DOS computer programs, 35 mm camera;  tools such as scalpels,
knives, steamers, hot-plates, scales, and chemicals (organic,
alkaline, and acids).

Overnight travel to return projects, perform on-site evaluations,
consultations, disaster planning, public speaking, and educational
workshops will occasionally occur.  Ability to drive with valid
driver's license therefore necessary.

Conservator II reports to the Senior Conservator in the Local
Records Preservation Program.  This position is permanent, full time
with daily work hours between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm.

Qualifications: A graduate degree in paper conservation or
demonstrable equivalent experience, plus a minimum of two years
practical experience performing currently practiced advanced paper
conservation treatment methods and techniques is required.
Additional experience in related areas such as photographic
materials, books, or archives considered advantageous. Previous
private or regional center experience a plus.

Physical capacity to lift and carry heavy (40 lbs.) or large items,
reach, squat, and bend is necessary.  General knowledge of current
professional ethics and practices is required.  General knowledge
and practice of safe conservation and laboratory procedures is
required:  The ability to wear personal protection equipment is
required.
