Providing a safe and secure environment for collections is a
fundamental curatorial role of the museum. You will explore the
principles and techniques of preventive care for artifacts in metal,
ceramics, wood, bone, leather, and other materials, with emphasis
on:

    *   principles of preventive conservation

    *   establishing conservation policies

    *   uses and classifications of artifacts

    *   roles of various professionals collections care

    *   physical factors in the preservation/deterioration of
        artifacts

    *   environmental monitoring; materials analysis; condition
        reporting

    *   preventive care techniques in handling, packing, display,
        transportation

    *   ethical, economic, cultural issues

Instructor: Mary Lou Florian is a Conservation Scientist and
Conservator Emeritus of the Royal British Columbia Museum

Fee: $589 (credit or non-credit, Canadian funds)

Travel: Victoria is easily accessible by air or ferry from both
Vancouver and Seattle
