Cleaning floors

Does anyone have any suggestions for a conservationally sound method to
clean a very scuffed and dirty floor?  The linoleum-like tile floor in
our vault needs to be cleaned and protected from future scuffs, but we
are extremely loath to use conventional cleaners and waxes, because of
the unknown chemicals and their vapors.  We also don't want to move
everything out.  Has anyone dealt with a similar situation, and can
offer some advice?  Thank you.
