Subject: CFC's and Wei To
There is a non-CFC aerosol deacidification alternative to Wei T'o developed by Preservation Technologies, Inc. (PTI) using the Bookkeeper process. The Bookkeeper process was developed by the Koppers Company in the early '80s for mass deacidification, but never commercialized. Originally it used CFC 113 as the carrier for the magnesium oxide which is deposited in the paper. However, PTI (which now owns the rights to the process and has actively begun to promote it) has found a substitute carrier which works equally as well--if not better (tests have not shown problems with adhesives, discoloration of certain inks, problems with coated paper, residual odor, etc. which occurred before). While the goal is still treatment of books by emersion, the product is available in a spray (either aerosol or non-aerosol). Bookkeeper with its new carrier has not yet been subjected to independent testing, but arrangements are being made. I'm sure the folks at PTI will be more than happy to supply information about the process and how to order the spray product.
