The resignation takes effect on January 20, 1993. In her resignation memo to NEH staff she highlights the preservation program and notes that NEH, "has made major progress towards preserving the hundreds of thousands of deteriorating documents in our libraries on which so much research relies." Celeste Colgan, Cheney's deputy will be the acting NEH Chairman until a new Chair is appointed. Erich J.
