POSITION                 BOOK CONSERVATOR

RESPONSIBILITIES

    Under the Director of Preservation and Conservation, is responsible
    for the conservation treatment of rare and unique bound library
    materials, generally requiring individual treatment and the
    treatment of other materials as directed.  Performs a wide variety
    of conservation tasks including: paper treatment (washing,
    deacidification, sizing, etc.); document repair; binding
    restoration; rebinding.

    Provides some supervision to a conservation technician. Assists in:
    conservation planning; program development; apprentice training;
    staff education.  Makes treatment decisions and recommendations, and
    helps to develop and control work flow and scheduling.  Works
    closely with other conservators, conservation staff, and library and
    archive curators.  The Cornell Department of Preservation and
    Conservation is involved in a comprehensive program of development.
    By January 1993, the Department staff will have increased from 25 to
    27, including 4 trained conservators and 8 conservation technicians.

    Provides assistance in funded consultancy, workshop, and intern
    training program.

    Performs other related duties as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS

    Extensive knowledge of book and manuscript conservation techniques
    as evidenced by: advanced diploma/degree in conservation;
    apprenticeship completion certification; other verifiable
    certification of advanced training, plus a minimum of two years
    related experience after training.  Sound academic background, with
    good oral and written communication skills, and ability to impart
    knowledge to others.

SALARY

    $25,000 minimum, depending upon experience and qualifications.
