Subject: Workshop on exhibit techniques
Ransom Center and Amigos Preservation Service to co-sponsor workshop on exhibit techniques The Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center of the Univ of Texas at Austin and the AMIGOS Preservation Service recently announced that they will co- sponsor a workshop, "Exhibit Techniques for Library and Archival Materials," on August 28-29, 1992 in Austin, Texas. The intensive, two day workshop, led by the nationally recognized staff of the Ransom Center Conservation Lab, will enable participants to use preservationally-sound techniques to mount exhibits. Instruction will focus on books, photographs and flat paper materials; painting and objects will be addressed briefly. Topics covered will include an introduction titled 'Why Exhibit Materials?', the care and handling of exhibit materials, the exhibit environment, physical preparation procedures and installation of the exhibit. The session will include demonstration of exhibit techniques, and a strong hands on component will give participants the opportunity to experience the steps required to safely mount an exhibition. The session will culminate in a final exercise of mounting a simulated exhibit using the techniques and housing constructed over the course of the workshop The session is designed for an audience of librarians, archivists, historical society and museum staff with some experience in and responsibility for mounting exhibits. The course will be especially helpful for institutions housing collections which are not served by a conservator.
