American Institute for Conservation Annual Meeting

Buffalo, New York

The Library Collections Conservation Discussion Group meeting originally
slated for Wednesday, June 3, 1992 has been changed to MONDAY, JUNE 8,
1992. The change has been made in response to an overwhelming request
from the Book and Paper Group membership that the meeting day be
scheduled as near to the Book and Paper Group session as possible.

This day-long meeting is dedicated to the repair of general collections
library materials. The emphasis is on book repairs and all techniques
that are oriented in some way towards efficient and economical
treatments of relatively large amounts of library material.

The day will be broken into two sessions. On view in the morning will be
an extraordinary display of repair techniques. More than 30 of our
colleagues from around the country have agreed to bring examples of the
range of work they are performing at their institutions. In order to
place this work in a context they will provide meeting participants with
a handout describing their program. The greater part of the morning will
be devoted to looking at, handling, and talking to one another about the
work.

There will be a directed discussion in the late morning and early
afternoon.. Issues to be taken up include: economy of effort vs. quality
of repair; using discrimination when applying PVA directly on the spine
of a book; decision-making when setting treatment specifications; and
tracking material while work is in progress. Our meeting will also
include an update of the national workshop on book repair sponsored by
the University of California at Berkeley.

The format for this meeting is deliberately informal to allow time for
developing a dialogue among the variety of conservators represented
within the LCCDG. There will be no formal presentation of papers, panel
discussions, or demonstrations. We encourage the attendance of
technicians and preservation administrators as well as conservators. We
are confident that the exhibit and discussion slated for Buffalo will
help define AIC's role in this rapidly developing area of book
conservation.

There is not an additional fee for this meeting if you are attending the
AIC conference. For those of you who wish to attend the LCCDG meeting
only, a one day registration fee is required. The AIC registration form
does not list Monday, June 8, 1992 because the date was changed after
the mailing; please write in the date on the registration form.
