Subject: PVA
Adding my 2 cents to the PVA issue: At the BYU Conservation Lab, we were surprised to notice strong fumes from the Jade 403, which we bought in 1991. Since we had used Jade 403 in former years, and not encountered any problems, we assume that the formula for Jade 403 has been altered. We rejected Wisdom R896A because the odor seemed to cause us headache and stomach distress. We experimented with CM bond, from Conservation Materials, and found less flexibility than with the Jade 403. We had determined to locate a source for Elvace 1874 and would like to thank Bobby Pilette for the information. Having used Elvace 1874 in the past with no ill effects, we hope this will be the end of our search. The MSDS's we obtained for Jade 403, CM bond, Elvace, and Wisdom, all caution the use of proper ventilation and avoiding contact with eyes and skin. We would appreciate hearing from those using Elvace 1875, and will report our findings, if it hasn't all been said by then.
