It serves museum professionals and institutions wishing to improve means of developing, managing, and conveying museum information through the use of automation. The Museum Computer Network supports coorperative efforts that will enable museums to play a more effective role in the creation and dissemination of cultural and scientific knowledge as represented by their collections and related documentation. Objectives: To support the development and implementation of standards for automated recording and retrieval of information about museum collections. To create mechanisms for interchange of information about museum holdings. To encourage the building of data and image bases relating to museum collections. To promote the development, and application of software to meet the full-range of automation requirements of museums. To publish and report on automation standards, techniques, and applications of relevance to museums. To foster interchange of technical information among current and prospective users of computers in museums. Organization: The Museum Computer Network is a nont-for-profit organization that has served museums and museum professionals since 1972. The organization is governed by a Board of Directors elected by the membership. Programs & Services: The Museum Computer Network publishes "Spectra" (a quarterly devoted to museum automation) and other materials of interest to its members, holds an annual conference, and offers workshops, seminars and other educational programs.
