Greetings!  Here is the latest working model of our Courthouse Fire
symposium agenda

This is a summary of presentation titles

CHANGES include a beefed-up background presentation, switch of one
a.m. and one p.m. presentation, refinement of several presentations,

II.  THE DISASTER

A.  ARSON ATTACK!

    Fire Prevention and Security Aspects of the Disaster.
    Peculiarities of Arson Fires, and protecting against them.
    Physical nature of this fire, how it was fought, and how it
    impacted the records.

    9:30-9:50 a.m. We still have no idea would might present this,
    although Nancy Zimmelman of the California State Archives is a
    possibility.

    9:50-10:00 a.m. - Discussion, panelists and from the floor

B.  RISK MANAGEMENT AND FACILITIES - LESSONS LEARNED

    Fire Suppression Systems, Ventilation Systems, and Shelving
    Systems: Costs, Benefits, Standards, and Building Codes.

    10:00-10:20 a.m.  We are talking to people in the State Fire
    Marshal's office,  the National Fire Protection Association, and
    other sources of fire expertise, but don't have anyone yet


    10:20-10:30 a.m. - Discussion, panelists and from the floor

BREAK - 10:30-10:50 a.m.

C.  RISK MANAGEMENT FOR INFORMATION RESOURCES - LESSSONS LEARNED

    Preserving resources through records management. Includes
    disaster planning for records, records disposition programs and
    archives, off site records centers, and vital records programs.

    10:50-11:10 a.m. We are talking to Joyce Sayed, Sonoma County
        Records Manager, who is a possible speaker for this

D.  11:10-11:50 - Discussion with panelists and from the floor, on
    "C" presentation and a.m. session as a whole

LUNCH  11:50 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

E.  THE PACKOUT: PHYSICAL AND INTELLECTUAL ASPECTS OF RELOCATING
    WATER DAMAGED RECORDS FOR TREATMENT

    1:00-1:20 p.m.   No speaker in mind yet.  Any ideas?  How about
        Judith Forston at Hoover?  Maybe someone from LAPNET?

F.  DRYING WATER-SOAKED RECORDS

    The Pros and Cons of Various Methods.  What went right/wrong in
    this disaster.

G.  DEALING WITH CONTRACTORS.

    Why disaster plans should include pre-screened contacts for
    records disaster recovery vendors/contractors.  Types needed and
    how to screen/select contractors that are right for your
    institution and needs.

H.  PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE: A MUTUAL ASSISTANCE AGREEMENT
