The large drum diameter (5.8 inches) was not the cause of the stiction
problem--it was the surface finish.  Around 1973, I discovered a way to
produce an air bearing that made the friction non-existant.  The VPR-1,
VPR-2, etc all had drums with the low-friction surface finish.

In my opinion, the Ampex tape made for the A format machines was terrible.
