Most film handbooks have a chart for converting footage into running time.
This is the formula that I use.

8mm     @ 80 frames per foot
super 8 @ 72 frames per foot
16 mm   @ 40 frames per foot

ft x frames divided by speed (frames per second) = total seconds

divide this by 60 and you will get minutes

Example:
50 ft of 8mm = 50ft x80frames per foot = 4000 frames divide by 18
fps = 222.22 seconds or 3.7 minutes

sound speed is 24 fps
silent speed is 18 fps
older silents shot at 16 fps.
