[AV Media Matters] Decaying rubber parts

While we're on the topic of preserving decaying equipment, what do people
recommend for removing rubber parts that have gone soft and syrupy? Is there
some solvent (sticky-label remover? WD-40? Coca-Cola? spit?) that handily
removes the nasty black goop while leaving the underlying plastics, paints,
etc. intact?

If you have an answer, please reply directly as well as to the list, since
for some undetermined reasom I can receive AV Media Matters only
sporadically. Thanks!
