Actually, dbx playback is an expander. dbx compresses at 2:1  with  
treble boost on record, expands 1:2 with treble reduction on  
playback. Not a good idea.

Though they did make some variations on the process, such as 2bx and  
3bx, but they are a cheesy effect at best. They got some rave reviews  
by some users (<http://www.audioreview.com/cat/accessories/others/dbx/ 
3bx-iii/PRD_117811_1590crx.aspx>) but are not recommended for  
accurate archival use, just a thrill on playback...
