Peter Martland's history of EMI (Since Records Began, EMI: The First 100 Years) says:

"In 1917...the Columbia Graphophone Company Ltd was formed...the chairman was Sir George Croydon Marks MP (later Lord Marks of Woolwich), formerly Thomas Edison's British patent aagent and an ex-chairman of his British record business...Marks [later became a] founding member of the EMI board." (page 110)
