Inside start and backwards are not always the same thing.

Unless you can find a way to make your turntable run backwards 
(counter-clockwise), the arm might fall off the record when you try 
to play an inside-start disk from the outside. It probably won't do 
any harm to the record, but it could damage the needle when it drops 
onto the surface of the deck.

The solution is to find a turntable that does not have an automatic 
shut-off feature, and start at the inside.
