Yes,

This organization is now known as the Advanced Media Workflow  
Association (AMWA), but it is much more focused on "wrapped" digital  
objects that are made up of divergent file types - not limited to audio.

So, I don't see them as a "competing format"....more so a "package"  
format designed for the post production environment.
