The entire technology is based on very extensive (and very expensive)
controlled double-blind listening tests covering a wide variety of sources.
The literature about this is fascinating because, among other things, it
exposes most hi-fi magazine or "ABX" listening tests as having an inadequate
training procedure which leads to virtually always achieving meaningless
random results. Most of the papers are available, many in German from the
I.E.E.E.
MP3 was considered an obsolete lossy coding technology at the time it first
appeared on the internet. Playback is carefully defined however encoding is
proprietary and there are many methods employed but obviously not published.
Now that a court has determined that everybody using the technology has to
pay patent royalties, most of the supposedly better-sounding alternatives to
those from the original developers seem to have fallen out of use.
