[ARSCLIST] California Preservation Survey of Moving Image and Recorded Sound Collections

**********************************
Preserving the 20th Century:
California Preservation Survey of Moving Image and Recorded Sound Collections Project

Presented by the California Preservation Program on behalf of the California State Library

Current events of the 20th century were recorded on a wide array of audiovisual media whose existence now is threatened by media
deterioration and equipment obsolescence. The California State Library invites California institutions with audiovisual collections to
participate in a statewide survey to determine the collective scope and scale of preservation needs as the first step toward development of a California audiovisual preservation program.

Participation in the survey project includes attending a 1-day workshop that focuses on:
* how to recognize preservation problems with your AV materials
* how to survey your collection using random sampling methods
* how to use Web-based survey software created for this survey project
* how to use the survey data to identify actions and set priorities to preserve your own collection
* how to contribute your institution's data to the project to be aggregated with data from other institutions statewide.

Following the workshop, participants will return to their institutions to implement the survey for their own collection. Participants' survey data will be aggregated in late April with a final report expected in June 2007. Collection-specific data can be used to support grant and fundraising efforts. Attendance at the workshop is not required for survey project participation.
