The Horncall (Journal of the International Horn Society) has a regular feature
reviewing horn-related CDs. This is a quarterly publication and comes free
with membership in the society (Kind of like Notes). I suppose one can
subscribe to it by itself, but probably not at any discount from the full
membership price.

You are correct about this being a generic feature of most instrument society
journals. I could attempt to survey what the NYPL subscribes to; I would
assume that this would be a fairly all-inclusive list. I know that there are
(at least) double-reed, trumpet, clarinet, trombone, flute, tuba and other
groups that one can join, though I have not seen all of their publications.

What is particularly useful (to me) about these sort of reviews is that much
of what is reviewed is totally off from the mainstream and is not likely to be
seen at stores and frequently is self produced or only a distributed through
sites like CDBaby and the like. For 3 or 4 decades, I have made it a project
of collecting horn recordings, so I have learned how to dig deep to ferret out
the obscurities from around the "horn planet". Even excellent classical
sources, like ArkivMusic.com and jpc.de fail to turn many of these up. The
creators of these discs seek out the forums that would be their only likely
chance for public exposure and usually have slim prospect of making it to
Fanfare or Gramophone.

Sounds like an interesting project, I'd be interested in hearing how it
progresses.
