OK, more research and tip from my brother might have found just teh ticket.

This seems to do everything I need. I think the best MO might be to run this software instead of 
iTunes on one computer and run both iTunes and this on the other computer. On the computer that runs 
iTunes, use that one as the podcast and video collector. I'm still thinking through whether I could 
add music on either computer without screwing up what iTunes sees. I guess I'd have to sync with 
Anapod in all cases before opening iTunes?

BTW, I don't think this is totally 180 degrees of topic because more and more libraries and 
archives' public faces for audio are circulating or in-building-use iPods, so librarians and 
archivists more likely than not will have to become acquainted with this world. Besides, the day 
might come when Steve Barr's half-vast shellac collection is downloadable through iTunes ...
