Well...if you want your sound "dampened," that can be easily done...with
a bucket of water!
More likely you want it "damped"...?!

I recall a friend giving a demonstration of a portable acoustic cylinder
player. He demonstrated the method of treble attenuation by stuffing a towel
in the soundhole. I believe he said that was where the phrase "put a sock in
it" originated.
Am I mistaken about that?
