I think, as was already mentioned, it was the "DO NOT XRAY" labels that did it.... The tinfoil actually belonged inside my crazy aunt's hat....

Aluminum is not an electromagnetic shielding material. It is electrostatic only. You would need something like mumetal to prevent erasure.
