Not just distorted but weaker and weaker until the noise the transport makes overwhelms the rest of the signal,

I'd also like to point out that if this was recorded on a battery operated machine, as the batteries died, the machine would have run slower (which would sound FASTER on playback at normal speed) and if the batteries got weak enough, the sound would also distort as the electronics were no longer operating properly.
