EMI started Angel in 1952 to market classical recordings from the HMV and 
Columbia catalogues in the UK. I would imagine this was done partly because 
they had already lost US Columbia as an outlet for their classical titles in 
the US, and they were aware that RCA was dropping them in five years. 

For much the same reason, EMI purchased Capitol Records in 1955, so that they 
had their own US outlet for popular music.  Capitol was merged with EMI US 
Ltd (Angel Records) in 1957, after the RCA contract expired.
