R2R...and even more so, cassettes...will probably survive, at least in the
sense of there being players available, for one simple reason. Unlike the
78, it was not only possible but simple for consumers to make their own
recordings...even of personally-important, but non-memorable, audio
"events!" So, if Joe Gabroni has a recording of his band playing...or
his wedding...or of his kid's fourth-birthday party...he'll want a way
to play it!

And, yes, he could (in theory) digitize these recordings, or hire it
done...burn the results to CD-R (or DVD-R, these days) and play those
in his home player...but it's unlikely he'd go to that effort...?!
