Yes, it is often much cheaper to toss the stuff than officially
donate it or sell it off.
An example I know of: A whole bunch of HP and other test gear was
dumpstered because it was in a leased building that was costing $30K
a month for the lease. The only way to get it out by the end of the
month was to toss it.
Take a look at the amount of time I went through to save and
distribute 5-6 "bankers boxes" of manuals I salvaged. I didn't sell
them, I merely asked for people to pay shipping. There were probably
over 100 emails and then all the boxing, etc.
It's cheaper to toss it than to put it on eBay and then deal with
shipping individual items, etc.
What we need to do is be on good terms with the people doing the
dumpstering. By the time that photo is taken, it's too late.. Movie
lot security won't let you near something like that.
