FILM ARCHIVIST

 

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History seeks to hire a film 
archivist for a three-year grant project to inspect, preserve, and 
digitize portions of a 16mm newsfilm collection. The project is funded 
by the U.S. Department of Interior's Save America's Treasures grant program.

 

The Newsfilm Collection consists of 635 reels of unedited 16mm film from 
a Jackson, Mississippi, television station between 1954 and 1971. It 
reflects life in the state, including extensive coverage of the Civil 
Rights Movement in Mississippi.

 

The film archivist will 1) inspect each reel of the Newsfilm Collection 
for damage, 2) clean and repair film reels, 3) select reels for 
conservation, 4) create digital copies of selected reels using telecine 
equipment and restoration software, 5) provide metadata elements using 
Dublin Core standards and according to project procedures, and 6) assist 
in the selection of equipment needed to digitize the collection. The 
archivist will report to the Archives and Library Director of Image and 
Sound and work in the Image and Sound Section, Archives and History 
Division.

 

REQUIRED:          

 

A Master's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in 
Information Science, History, or a related field; and two (2) years of 
archival experience working with conservation of film collections. 
Formal classroom or workshop training in audiovisual archival work 
provided by academic library school programs and/or professional 
association organizations such as SAA, ARSC and AMIA.

 

Or

A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university 
in Information Science, History, or a related field; and four (4) years 
of archival experience working with conservation of film collections. 
Formal classroom or workshop training in audiovisual archival work 
provided by academic library school programs and/or professional 
association organizations such as SAA, ARSC and AMIA.

 

PREFERRED:

 

Evidence of technical training in preservation and reformatting of 
audiovisual materials, particularly with film and video collections. 
Professional familiarity with current trends and techniques in archival 
preservation as it relates to audiovisual holdings. Demonstrated 
knowledge of issues surrounding the creation and management of digital 
objects in sound and visual formats. Demonstrated ability to properly 
handle and repair fragile motion picture film for telecine transfer and 
to transfer motion picture film to video by use of telecine and video 
equipment. Experience with Dublin Core metadata standards and software, 
on-line cataloging systems and Informix SQL.

 

This full-time contractual position is currently on recruitment with an 
annual starting salary of $36,000.
