The only secret is a scanner with uniform illumination. The line along which stitching is effected will have at most one point where the two scans are truly conicident. An absolute difference in image brightness is easily corrected; a difference varying along the seam will defeat any software I've used. (However, I am using an ancient graphics program, PicturePublisher. I own Photoshop, but have not needed to graduate to it.)
