[ARSCLIST] Fwd: cleaning up after Katrina - vinyl records

There is aa folk music and dance elist I am on, and this juts showed up today - can ayone comment on whether ot not this is good, and what the easy effective way might be I can recommend to them? I think a direct response miight be more efficient than searching the archives and trying to find the best methods... Hope this is a reasonable request!
Thanks in advance,
Lou

Several people suggested using isopropyl alcohol:water (1:4). It didn't work because the records were submerged not only in water but also in what resembles really, REALLY thick, black engine oil.So decided to use the same stuff I'm using to scrub the outsdide of my house, porch railings. etc.: "Simple Green". I'm sure there are other similar products, this one seems to be most popular in NOLA right now. Buy it by the gallon, a serious degreaser. At first it felt sort of ludicrous - use the same thing on your driveway and on your records? But then - what did I have to lose except lost records? Got a dishpan and a clean very soft sponge, mixed 1:1, SG:water (label suggests this ratio for 'heavy cleaning') and started to gently wash each record. Did this until the oily sheen had disappeared from the surface. I might run into some records that have more serious damage; however, so far it's worked perfectly, they all sound good as new.

Happy about each little victory,
