[ARSCLIST] DC Local ARSC event

DC-area ARSC members and friends,

Mark your calendars for the following event sponsored by the Washington Metropolitan Area Chapter of ARSC and the Motion Picture Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress:

Documenting D.C's Underground
Hip Hop Scene:

History and Performance in Process

Hip hop is erroneously seen by some as an illegitimate art form that represents degenerated American culture. Too much attention is paid to pop hip hop artists and the negative aspects of the culture and not enough attention is given to its artistic, metaphorical, social and rhythmic contributions as well as its historical and cultural connections to the Diaspora.

Using sound recordings, images, and his own in-depth research, Dr. William Smith, a professor of music at American University, will examine the local underground hip hop scene and its importance to black expressive culture in Washington D.C.
