I've heard the same thing.  Without it, the record changers wouldn't change.
I have a mono 33.3 only 'table that could use an auto lift since 90% of the
stuff I play on it has the eccentric circle.  I don't know if it's really
bad for a stylus assembly, but it kind of freaks me out.

I believe the first run-off grooves were designed to trip automatic stop
mechanisms on your old wind-ups.
