Description of Unit
The UCLA Digital Library Program (DLP) serves as the catalyst for the creation, management, and delivery of digital content in support of the UCLA Library mission and goals. The program reports to the AUL for the UCLA Electronic Library and currently consists of 4 academic personnel and a cadre of project-based casual staff. In addition, several staff members in other units have regular working relationships with the Digital Library Program to provide expertise in usability, copyright, and descriptive metadata. The Digital Library Program is also supported by the Digital Library Architect and a team of technical staff in Library Information Systems and draws on the advice of content experts in the Library.

Duties
Reporting to the Head of the Digital Library Program (DLP), in coordination with the Head of the Oral History Program (OHP), work closely with both Digital Library and Oral History Program staff, providing expert technical advice and support in all areas of recording, processing, reformatting, compression, and streaming of audio and video. Building on UCLA Digital Library tools and architecture, and working with staff of the Oral History and Digital Library Programs, and Library Information Technology, design and implement systems for the effective management and dissemination of OHP interviews online, both locally and via the Internet. With minimal supervision, develop project plans and schedules to enhance the OHP digital publishing system, track the projects, and ensure successful implementation. Maintain expert knowledge of current standards and practices in digital audio and video, especially as applied in spoken word recording, digital libraries, oral history programs,!

 delivery over networks. Develop appropriate best practices for digital audio and video recording, editing, storage and playback of OHP digital audio files based on standards. Develop and maintain the digital streaming environment for public access to OHP digital collections. Provide expert advice and support for all Digital Library projects with audio and video content. Work with metadata experts in DLP and the Library Cataloging and Metadata Center to develop and maintain appropriate metadata standards for digital audio and video collections.

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in audio and/or video engineering, or computer science, or a related field preferred. Demonstrated audio and/or video-related experience. Ability to master emerging technologies and adapt in a rapidly changing technological environment. Ability to work independently to organize and complete projects. Demonstrated ability to create solutions that are technically sound, practical, and reliable. Knowledge of audio and video file formats (e.g. WAV, AIFF, AU, MOV) and encoding, transmission and compression standards (e.g. PCM, MPEG). Skill in creating multimedia streaming environments using commercial software such as Real Networks, Windows Media, Quicktime. Skill in creating web pages and structured texts using markup languages (e.g. HTML, XML) and web technologies (e.g. CSS, JavaScript), incorporating multimedia elements (e.g. audio and video streaming, coordinated multimedia delivery). Knowledge of relational database design and function preferr!

 in programming or scripting database-driven web applications preferred. Knowledge of metadata standards for digital library projects preferred. Skill in creating XML documents and XSLT preferred.
