Below is a reply to this topic sent to me by Olle Johansson, Head of
Cataloging at the Swedish National Archive for Recorded Sound and
Moving Images.  I found his manipulations of the IASA scheme
interesting and, with his permission, I have copied his original
message here.....

I am responsible for the cataloguing at SLBA, The Swedish National
Archive for Recorded Sound and Moving Images, i n Stockholm,
Sweden. I am also Chair of the Cataloguing Committe in IASA.

When we developed our new in-house cataloguing rules in 2003,
based on the IASA Cataloguing Rules, we found that the terms sound
disc, video disc etc. caused problems. So we decided to divide the
type of media from the carrier in the description, since you can store
different types of media on the same carrier.

In our new cataloguing system which will be in use later this spring
we have divided the physical description into the following fields:

Type of media: sound/video/multimedia etc.
Carrier: disc/reel/cassette etc.
Storage manner I: mechanical/magnetic/optical etc.
Storage manner II: analog/digital
Format: LP/VHS/DVD-Audio/DVD-Video/DVD-R etc.

This enables us to describe your example as follows:

Type of media: sound
Carrier: disc
Storage manner I: optical
Storage manner II: digital
Format: DVD-R
