But don't ordinary volume controls use an "audio taper?" If you used an ordinary potentiometer, where resistance is in direct proportion to shaft travel, how would our ears and mind react?
There is no signficance to the audio taper; one simply sets a level for the listening purpose at hand. The issue is change of the ear's sensitivity to the spectrum as a function of level. That is not affected by the linearity or deliberate non-linearity of the level control.
