Any one having an M/S matrix can easily hear this for oneself while
listening to the vertical component only, or S part, while playing a
lateral cut disk where the distortion rises to alarming proportions on
the onset transient such as sibilance and strings, cymbals so on.

Everyone who have heard this very quickly switches their preamps to mono
to get rid of this unclean distorted mess coming from the vertical part
that where never meant to be replayed, or heard, when these disks were
cut originally.

This malpractice arised due to the availability of stereo pickups fitted
with stylus suitable for replay of mono shellac disks and not realizing
that you must avoid at all cost the vertical component by switching the
cartridge to mono by doing L+R = M

And a total misunderstanding of the technical background needed to do
these disks justice.
