Re: [ARSCLIST] RCA Living Stereo
I guess this would be as opportune a time as any to mention that the
first wave of the Mercury Living Presence hybrid SACD/CDs will be
released October 12. Those to be released first are:
Antal Dorati, Philharmonia Hugarica Orchestra - Respighi: Ancient Airs &
Dances for Lute
Antal Dorati, London Symphony Orchestra - Stravinsky: The Firebird
(Complete); Tango; Scherzo à la Russe
Byron Janis, Antal Dorati, London Symphony Orchestra, Minneapolis
Symphony Orchestra - Rachmaninov: Piano Concerti 2 & 3; 2 Preludes
Paul Paray, Detroit Symphony Orchestra - Suppé: Overtures (+Auber)
Janos Starker - Bach: Six Suites For Solo Cello
These were all originally recorded on 3 separate tracks, so this will be
the first time the recordings will be available as they were originally
recorded. The CD layer, however, will be the same as the currently
available CDs and the list price will be close to $20. The RCA Living
Stereo hybrid SACD/CDs have their audio layer newly downconverted from
the DSD SACD element and are about $10.
Disclaimer: Your aesthetic mileage may vary.

Don't know how it'd be implemented but I think it would be absolutely
amazing. I, for one, would probably spend hours experimenting with
multimiking vs. simple miking technics, placement, etc if those options were
available. It'd be extremely enlightening to have a 'reference' mix and then
be able to tailor it to one's preferences. You'd probably end up with quite
a few audiophiles in straightjackets from going insane tweaking, listening,
tweaking, listening, tweaking, listening.

As a former clarinetist, I like the "in the midst of the orchestra"
aesthetic. I also must admit to being inordinately obsessed with

these discs are perfect for me.
Perhaps not an original thought, but new to me...what about a recording
which would allow you to choose a microphone set up (or perspective) of your
choice...a bit like a DVD with alternative endings to the movie?
