Audio CDs have two layers of error correction. Data discs have three.
Even two layers is more than adequate to correct errors from the discs
themselves. All players contain a chip that performs these corrections.

Not all errors are "on the disc." Severe, uncorrectable errors can be
generated by mistracking in the player. This can be traced to cheap
hardware. It can also result from the use of discs having capacities in
excess of 74 minutes, since these often have small values of track pitch
that are out of spec.
