Re: [ARSCLIST] Unpublished vs. Unissued Recordings

Is there any difference between an unpublished and an unissued recording?
Frank

Hi Frank-

I am a retired bookseller, so I tend to regard "publish" as the act
to put into print as in to publish a book. But the typical
dictionary definition includes the wording -- "to make public" -- so
in this sense a recording that is not issued is "unpublished."
Regardless of the term used, the recording is unavailable for
consumption by the public.

I had several exchanges recently on the jazz west coast list and the
jazz research list regarding sessions recorded for the Keynote label
in the mid 1950s that were lost, unissued, but made public in a sense
in that they were announced in Down Beat magazine as forthcoming
recordings. But in fact the recordings were never released and
remain "lost" to the jazz community.

I hope I caught the drift of your inquiry...

Regards-

Jim
