you might want to check out one of the larger record
retailers in the NYC area like virgin or tower, or
even  restoration hardware, for a consumer storage
case that could work as a readymade base for your
package design.

several years ago the smashing pumpkins released a
multi-disc CD boxed set styled very much like your
idea. it was designed to function like an old 45
carrying case. since then, with the renewed nostalgia
for vinyl, i have seen similar cases sold for CD
storage.  but i can't remember where (or what their
capacity for standard jewel boxes was).

failing that, i could give you a name or two offlist
of
designers/directors from the city's larger record
companies and packaging firms, who may know someone
that does freelance work.
