arsclist Tape dating help, please

Hi, folks,

I have just received a tape to restore and was told it was from the 50s.

There is no date on it.

There are only two things that can help date it:

(1) It IS 1/4 track mono

(2) it's in a box (and I believe it's original) called "Soundtape" no 
address, etc. but made in U.S.A.

When did 1/4 track machines start becoming available? I had always thought 
it was the very early 60s.
