You are misunderstanding my point, which is that a librarian/curator
making transfers from a large number of originals cannot take the
individual care that a specialist engineer can.

I was mainly thinking of the pitch correction in Kind of Blue. The LPs
and early CDs had some tracks at the wrong pitch. (I haven't heard the
SACD version.)

That is particularly a problem with 78s. The researcher may need access
to the originals so as to listen at various speeds. 

OTOH for "routine" research (students doing projects, for instance) the
transfers will be OK.
